Chongli Ski Briefing 崇禮滑雪簡報 — 萬龍 Wanlong · 雲頂 Genting · 太舞 Thaiwoo

Three resorts, one valley, one hour from Beijing by high-speed train. Wanlong is the Beijing regulars' favourite — the biggest, steepest and snowiest-feeling mountain in Chongli, and the one friends keep recommending. Genting is the Olympic venue, all polish and parks. Thaiwoo is the alpine ski town built for families and evenings. This briefing gives Wanlong the full deep-dive, profiles the other two properly, then puts all three head-to-head.

Why one briefing, not three? Because the three resorts sit within about 20 minutes of each other, share the same station, the same weather and the same price band — so the access, climate and cost story is written once, up top, and each resort only has to answer one question: what kind of ski day is it best at? Read the shared chapter once, then pick your mountain. Nothing here is duplicated — and a mixed group can realistically ski two of the three in one trip.

Chongli at a glance — the shared chapter

Read once; it applies to all three resorts.

Where & what it is

Chongli (崇禮) is a mountain district of Zhangjiakou, Hebei, about 220 km northwest of Beijing, with resorts sitting between roughly 1,600 m and 2,160 m. It was the snow cluster of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics — freestyle, snowboard, cross-country and biathlon events were held here — and the infrastructure built for the Games (the high-speed railway, expressways, athlete villages turned hotels) is what now serves ordinary visitors.

Six or seven resorts are packed into connected valleys, most within 20 minutes of each other by car. Wanlong, Genting and Thaiwoo are the big three around Taizicheng (太子城); a second group (Fulong and others) clusters around Chongli town and Chongli station instead — book your hotel in the right valley, or you add a daily commute.

Climate & snow — set expectations honestly

  • Made snow is the base. Natural snowfall is only about 1 m a season, so snowmaking and grooming do the heavy lifting. Pistes are firm and consistent; deep natural powder days are the exception, not the promise.
  • Cold and dry: January days typically run −12 to −18 °C, with lots of sun — good for snow quality, demanding on exposed skin.
  • Wind is the recurring theme across all Chongli resorts: it scours exposed faces, creates icy patches and can hold lifts. Dress for windchill, and treat a calm bluebird day as a bonus to spend on the most exposed mountain.
  • Season shape: Wanlong opens first (late October) and closes last (early April); Genting and Thaiwoo open through November and wind down from late March.

Getting there

  • Train (best option): Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed line from Beijing North or Qinghe to Taizicheng station — about 1 hour (fastest ~58 min; allow up to ~1 h 25 on slower services), second class from roughly ¥80–100. Book a few days ahead for weekends via 12306 or a travel platform; ski trains sell out.
  • Shuttles: free resort shuttles meet trains at Taizicheng — ~5 min to Genting, a few minutes to Thaiwoo, ~15 min to Wanlong. Resorts also run timed buses back for evening trains.
  • Driving: ~3–3.5 hours from central Beijing via the G6/G7/Jingli expressways — straightforward midweek, notoriously slow on winter weekends and holidays.
  • Day trip or stay? A day trip works for a taste; two nights is the honest minimum to ski one resort properly, three if you want to sample two.

What it costs (guide ranges)

Day passes at the big three run roughly ¥200–450 on weekdays and ¥400–800 on weekends/holidays, varying by resort and season — recent published examples include Genting at ¥418 lift-only (¥598 with rental gear) and Thaiwoo notably cheaper on weekdays. Wanlong has traded at the premium end on weekends (¥560–800 in a recent season).

Multi-resort and season passes exist and change yearly. As everywhere in this briefing: trail counts, prices and opening dates shift by season — confirm on the resort's official channels before travelling.

長龍道 Changlongdao — the gentle summit-to-base run almost anyone can ski

Background

Wanlong opened on 18 December 2003 — one of China's earliest modern ski resorts, built privately in the Honghuali area years before the Olympic spotlight arrived. It is a national 4A-rated scenic area (described as China's first 4A attraction built around skiing) and has grown steadily into Chongli's largest trail network.

Its nickname tells you its reputation: 粉雪天堂 — “powder paradise.” That is relative, Chongli-style — with only ~1 m of natural snowfall a season, nobody should expect Niseko. What Wanlong does have is Chongli's best combination of elevation, sheltered forested aspects and snowmaking, so after a snowfall its tree terrain holds soft snow longer than anywhere else in the valley. Comparison guides consistently call it the local favourite and the most serious mountain of the three.

The skiing

  • Tree / glade skiing is the headline: around 2.3 million m² of forested terrain between the pistes — the morning after a snowfall, rime coats the larches and the glades are where everyone heads.
  • Advanced-leaning mix: the named “Dragon” runs (金龍 Jinlong, 銀龍 Yinlong, 五彩龍 Wucailong series) give long, continuous descents with real pitch and mogul options; 6 runs are FIS-certified.
  • But beginners are not forgotten: 長龍道 (Changlongdao) runs a gentle 4.8 km from the summit all the way to the base — a first-timer can stand on top of Chongli's biggest mountain and ski down it. Teaching and children's trails sit in the East Area.
  • Night skiing is part of Wanlong's tradition (it is often credited as a pioneer of night skiing in China) — check the current season's schedule.
  • Longest season in Chongli: opened 23 October in 2026, weeks ahead of plan after an early cold snap, and typically runs to early April.

Who it suits

  • Confident intermediates & advanced — the core audience; this is where you come to lap vertical.
  • Powder-day opportunists — the only one of the three where a snowfall genuinely changes the day (trees!).
  • Determined beginners — via Changlongdao and the East Area, though dedicated beginner space is tighter than at Thaiwoo.
  • Snowboarders — long fall-line runs and glades; note one recent guide reported rental boards/skis in limited longer lengths, so keen riders may prefer bringing their own gear.

Honest cons

  • Furthest from the station — ~15-minute shuttle from Taizicheng (still free, still easy, but the longest hop of the three).
  • Less polished village life — hotels and dining are functional rather than a destination; for après and wandering, Thaiwoo wins easily.
  • Older facilities in parts — a 2003 resort shows its age next to Olympic-built Genting.
  • Weekend premium pricing — day tickets at the top of the Chongli range on peak days.

China's first Olympic-spec halfpipe built here

Background

Opened in 2012 by Malaysia's Genting Group, Genting Resort Secret Garden (密苑雲頂樂園, also signed as Yunding / Genting Snow Park) was Chongli's international flag-bearer long before the Olympics — and then became one: it hosted the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events of Beijing 2022, plus Paralympic snowboard, and remains a national team training base.

The comfort detail everyone remembers: all five of its high-speed lifts have heated seats — unique in China. At −15 °C, that is not a gimmick.

The skiing

  • Sunny aspect, long groomed blues — the carving mountain of the three; wide, rolling intermediate mileage across interconnected zones.
  • Parks are world-class: the Olympic halfpipe legacy, big-air and terrain-park features — the default choice for park riders.
  • A count worth flagging: Chinese sources list 41 trails (13 advanced / 20 intermediate / only 2 beginner / 6 off-piste + parks); the resort's own materials have used ~32 runs / ~28 km, and Ikon lists 45. Treat any single number with suspicion — the shape of the mix (intermediate-heavy, beginner-light) is consistent across all of them.

Who it suits

  • Intermediates who carve — long sunny blues are its home turf.
  • Park riders & snowboarders — Olympic pedigree, halfpipe heritage.
  • Comfort-first skiers — heated seats, polished hotels (Genting Grand at the base), strong English-friendly instruction.

Honest cons

  • Only 2 true beginner runs — first-timers are better served at Thaiwoo.
  • Olympic courses are mostly closed to the public — you ski beside the pedigree more than on it.
  • Weekend queues at the lifts on peak days, and premium hotel prices.

High-speed lifts + magic carpets, with a dedicated beginner zone

Background

Opened in 2015 and master-planned by Canada's Ecosign (the Whistler-based firm that also designed Genting), Thaiwoo was built from scratch as a four-season alpine resort town, not just a ski hill: pedestrian streets, chalet-style hotels including international brands, restaurants, bars, a brewery and live music — the most complete village in Chongli, and an events venue in its own right (it has hosted FIS freestyle World Cup competition).

It is also a summer resort — mountain biking, hiking and cool high-altitude air — which is why the town feels lived-in rather than seasonal.

The skiing

  • The balanced mountain: ~31 trails in a deliberate 3:4:3 beginner/intermediate/advanced split, designed by Ecosign as wide cruisers that follow the mountain's contours, with FIS-ready expert runs up top.
  • Best beginner setup of the three: a comprehensive, dedicated beginner centre with 13 magic carpets across the resort and non-skiers able to watch from the town edge.
  • 510 m of vertical under Yushiliang (2,160 m) — second only to Wanlong, and plenty for a full day.

Who it suits

  • Families and first-timers — everything in one place, no travelling after skiing.
  • Mixed-ability groups — the 3:4:3 mix means nobody is stranded at the wrong level, and non-skiers get a real town.
  • Holiday-first skiers — if the evening matters as much as the morning, this is your base.

Honest cons

  • The wind funnel: Thaiwoo's exposure is notorious — wind-scoured, icy patches are common and snow quality is generally rated a notch below Wanlong and Genting.
  • Premium town prices for slope-side hotels and dining, especially in peak season.
  • Furthest from Chongli town — you are in the Taizicheng valley bubble (a plus for the station, a minus for exploring the old town).

Which one for whom

The short answer, by traveller.

Ski first

Choose Wanlong if…

You can already ski or board at intermediate level and want vertical, variety and the best snow in Chongli — long fall-line runs, FIS pitches, and trees after a snowfall. Also the pick for early- and late-season trips, thanks to the longest season. This is why Beijing regulars — and your friends — keep naming it.

Polish & parks

Choose Genting if…

You carve groomers, ride park, or simply like things done properly: Olympic courses next door, a halfpipe heritage, heated lift seats and the most international feel in the valley. Best as a confident skier's day — not a first-timer's.

The holiday

Choose Thaiwoo if…

You're bringing family, beginners or a mixed group — or the trip is as much about the evenings as the slopes. The balanced 3:4:3 mountain plus Chongli's best village makes it the lowest-stress base of the three. Just pack for wind.

Doing two in one trip? A sensible pattern

Base in Thaiwoo town (best beds, food and evenings, minutes from the station), ski Wanlong on the best-weather or fresh-snow day — it's only ~20 minutes away — and give Genting a sunny weekday for cruising and parks with thinner queues. One trip, three personalities, no repeated access story: that is the whole argument for this single briefing.

07

Suitability by level — across the three

Where each level is best served in the valley.

First-timers & beginners

Thaiwoo first — dedicated beginner centre, magic carpets, lessons and lodging in one place. Wanlong is a respectable second thanks to the 4.8 km 長龍道 from the summit. Genting last — only 2 true beginner runs despite its polish.

Thaiwoo ★

Improvers & intermediates

Spoilt for choice: Genting's long sunny groomed blues for carving confidence, Wanlong's continuous fall-line mileage for progression, Thaiwoo's wide Ecosign cruisers in between.

All three ★

Advanced

Wanlong — the steepest sustained terrain, FIS runs, moguls and glades; it is the only one of the three advanced riders consistently travel for. Genting's advanced runs are real but fewer; Thaiwoo's expert top section is the supporting act to its town.

Wanlong ★

Park & freestyle

Genting, clearly — the Beijing 2022 freestyle and snowboard venue, with China's first Olympic-spec halfpipe (2016) in its bloodline and a national-team training base on site.

Genting ★

Experts chasing extremes

Set expectations: Chongli's biggest vertical is 554 m on made snow. For long freeride descents and deep natural powder, China's big western mountains (Altay's Jikepulin and Keketuohai) are a different league — Chongli's game is accessibility and polish, an hour from a capital city.

Tips, warnings & recommendations

For any first Chongli trip, in any week of the season.

Read this before day one

Take the train, book it early: Beijing North/Qinghe → Taizicheng, ~1 hour. Weekend ski trains sell out days ahead — and the 3–3.5-hour drive can become much longer in holiday traffic.

Ski weekdays if you possibly can: all three resorts draw Beijing's weekend crowd; queues, prices and shuttle loads all peak Saturday–Sunday and public holidays.

Dress for wind, not just cold: −12 to −18 °C plus Chongli wind means full face cover and no exposed skin on lift rides. Thaiwoo's funnel and any exposed ridge are the worst of it.

Chase the weather window: if fresh snow falls during your stay, spend that day at Wanlong's trees; spend the calm sunny day at Genting or on Thaiwoo's top section.

Stay in the right valley: Taizicheng-side lodging for these three resorts; Chongli town lodging belongs to the Fulong group. Mixing them up adds a daily transfer.

Verify before you go: opening dates, open trails, night-skiing schedules and pass prices are set season by season — check each resort's official announcements and the current rate card, not last year's screenshots.

Gear note: rental fleets are improving but longer ski/board lengths can be limited at peak times; keen riders with preferences should bring their own.

Altitude is gentle: bases around 1,600–1,650 m and summits to 2,160 m — expect dry air and strong sun rather than altitude sickness. Hydrate and use sunscreen.
